Major Prizes & Awards Opportunities & Deadlines

This is where you'll find a month-by-month listing with internal McMaster deadlines and external sponsor deadlines. Each listing links to a useful "at-a-glance" page providing information about eligibility and what's required for the nomination package.

  • Order of Canada: Recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation. Any Canadian citizen may be appointed to the Order. Deadline: Rolling
  • Volvo Environmental Prize open to all fields of environmental and sustainability studies and initiatives. Deadline January 10, 2018
  • Manning Innovation Awards  Canadians who have conceived, developed and successfully marketed an innovative product or process. The awards have recognized innovators from a variety of disciplines including Agriculture, Aviation, Civil Engineering, Communications, Medical Science, Submarine Engineering and the Environment. January 15, 2018
  • Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science & Engineering  recognizes outstanding Canadian teams of researchers from different disciplines who have combined their expertise to produce achievements of outstanding international significance in the natural sciences and engineering in the last six years. Deadline: March 1, 2018
  • NSERC John C. Polanyi Award is given to an individual or team whose research, conducted in Canada, has led to a recent outstanding advance in any NSERC-supported field of the natural sciences or engineering. The research leading to the advance must have been funded at least partially by an NSERC grant. The award is open to all researchers, regardless of their career stage. Deadline: March 1, 2018
  • Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal is awarded for both the sustained excellence and overall influence of a body of work conducted in Canada in the natural sciences or engineering. Deadline: March 1, 2018
  • Royal Society of Canada Awards & Medals - various medals and awards will be announced January 15, 2018; deadline is March 1, 2018 
  • Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists 
  • Canadian Academy of Health Sciences Fellow
  • Balzan Prize
  • Order of Ontario

If you intend to submit a nomination for one of these awards, please notify , Manager, Prizes and Awards. Danelle can help facilitate the nomination process and determine if, in some cases, an internal competition needs to be held to select an institutional nominee. We'd also like to hear from you if you are planning to submit a nomination so that nomination activity can be effectively and confidentially tracked.
