Research at McMaster University faded

Endowed and Industrial Research Chairs

Endowed chairs and professorships enable researchers of the highest calibre to pursue critically important areas of study and recruit and nurture the next generation of researchers. With the support of individual and corporate partners, endowed chairs and professorships serve to attract and retain internationally renowned researchers in a variety of disciplines, ensuring that McMaster's students learn from the very best in the world. Industrial Research Chairs bring together our industry partners and stellar faculty to tackle significant research challenges.

Endowed Chairs and Professorships

There are more than a dozen Endowed Chairs in the Faculty of Engineering and more than sixty Endowed Chairs and Professorships in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Industrial Research Chairs

Funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Industrial Research Chairs (IRC) are intended to:

  • assist universities in building on existing strengths to achieve the critical mass required for a major research endeavour in science and engineering of interest to industry; and/or
  • assist in the development of research efforts in fields that have not yet been developed in Canadian universities but for which there is an important industrial need; and

  • provide an enhanced training environment for graduate students and, where appropriate, postdoctoral fellows by exposing them to research challenges unique to industry and the opportunity for significant ongoing interactions with the industrial partner(s).
  • Senior Industrial Research Chairs are researchers of international stature who bring an innovative perspective to the university in carrying out and managing research, and training researchers. They are recognized as international leaders in their field and considered to be exceptional in comparison to their research peers. Appointments are for an initial five-year term, which may be renewed every five years.
